For comparison of the food value of four different epecies of
aquatic weeds: potamogeton pectinatus , potamogeton lucens,
potamogeton perfoliatus, Najas minor and two species of
terrestrial grass: Medicago sativa and Cynodon dactylon by grass
carp (Ctenopharyngodon ideDa), was studied in the Shahicl Rejai
fishfarm in Sari (province of Mazandaran). Totally 6 concrete
ponds with 30 cubic meter volume free of any vegetation were
used. Each ponds was stocked by 25 fishes weighing about 150
gramms. Different plant was given to each pond separately every
morning during 60 days (July-August) experiment period. The
results showed that food conversion rate from various weeds was
different and the best belonged to Medicago sativa (1: 19) and the
worst to P. perfoliatus (1:50). In order to determine the nutritional
composition of given provenders, chemical analysis methods were
used. To measure protein, carbohydrate, fat, fiber, phosphorous
and calcium, methods of Folin-Lowry, Glucose standard curve,
Soxlet, Methylthymol blue and ultraviolet were used respectively.
Percentage of protein and phosphorous of Medicago sativa in dry
weight showed the highest (17.5% and 0.6%). There was a good
linear relationship between the quantity of chemical compostion
and food conversion rate of different plants which could be positive
or negative one. However protein and phosphorous played an
important rule for achivieng a better conversion rate. The value of
correlation coefficients between protein and phosphorous were
r = -0.75 and r = -0.96 respectively, which the last one was
statistically significant (p

A six years old Friesian Holestin cow was admitted to the
Veterinary Clinic of Shiraz University during.-.the spring. The cow
had been anorectic with a reduced milk yield. On physical
examination the animal showed increased heart beats and
respiratory rate. The rumen was hypomotile and resonance sound
was heared on the upper half of intercostal 10th to right flank.
Distension and displacement of the abomasum was diagnosed. At
surgery the abomasum was distended and displacement to the right
side with counter clockwise direction. The rigth displacement of
the abomasum was corrected. A hyperemic and firm duodenum
was found, which was subsequently diagnosed as duodenal ulcer.
Abomasal ulceration in cattle is common but duodenal ulceration is
rare.

Astudy was undertaken to evaluate histomorphologically the effect
of ultrasound therapy after creating " wedge fracture " on the left
metacarpal bone in 12 clinically healthy adults donkeys between 4
to 6 years age and 150 to 300 Kg/Bw. These animals were
randomly divided in two groups of I, II of 6 animals each. These
groups were further divided into two subgroups of la, lIa of one
month and Ib, lib of two months duration of 3 animals each.
Ultrasound therapeutic regimen of 1 MHz with intensity of 1
W/Cm2 for 10 minutes for 10 days was started a week after
fracture creation in animals group II where as group I acted as
control one. The macroscopic and microscopic study of callus was
done at the end of one and two months observation period. The
samples collected were decalcified and were stained with H&E
stains. There was the adhesions between surrounding soft tissue
and callus were rough, hard and strong. The adhesions were more
irregular and extensive in the la animals than lIa ones. The callus
appeared sufficiently elevatedfrom the adjacent periosteal tissue
and was soft and light grey colour. It was gritty during trephining
on 30 days after fracture creation. The scar tissue and adhesions
were present as a small and distinct layer of fibrous mass between
skin, muscles and the fractured bone. The callus had a bony colour
and it was well demarcated from periosteal surface with a rough,
uneven and raised remnant of periosteal collar in the Ib animals,
where as only few foci of adhesions were present between the site
of fracture and surrounding tissues. The callus surface was more
smooth and it had regained its original bony colour in lIb animals
on 60 days gross observation. H&E staining revealed that the
hematoma had almost completely been replaced with dense fibrous
tissue and numerous cartiflagenous cells at different stages of
chondrification had been observed in Ia animals where as fracture
was densely filled with fibrinous and cartilagenous tissue and the
newly formed osseous trabeculae were observed in lIa animals too.
The entire fracture gap was almost ossified with mixture of
cartilagenous and bony tissue in Ib animal. But in lib animals
ossification was more advanced and union of fracture site with
ossified callus was evident.

dirofilariasls Is a metazoan infestation with high endemicity. This
study was carried out to indicate prevalence of dirofilariasis in dogs
in that district. By using cluster sampling method, from 6000 dogs,
300 dogs were selected by cluster sampling and samples were
examined for the presence of microfilaria. We examined tick
smear layer of blood sample from 286dogs (14 smears were lost in
different stages of survey) all smears were tested using light
microscopic examination. Microfilaria of Dirofilaria immitis in
microscopicexamination ofsamples were found in 34.60% (CI,
34.49-35.71) of samples. Positivity rates were not different in
male and female dogs but the significant in various age groups, with
the lowest rate (18.4%) in dogs 1-3 years old. The positivity in
aged dogs (Older than 10 years) was the highest (56.8%). It is
concluded that there were apprOXimately 2000 infected dogs in
the villages of the study area. As the sample is reprensentative of
the dog population in the area, it is concluded that almost one third
of dogs are in fected in this area. This may have untoward effects
on the economy of the area which is based on sheep rearing in
which dogs play important role.

Review of the literature relating to the

A number of studies have attempted to demonstrate the
antibacterial properties of skin mucus from different species of fish
such as turbot, Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, gold fish, seabass,
seabream, flounder, barramundi, cichlid and yellowtail . However,
most have suffered from alack of definitive data concerning the
virulence of the organisms used for in vitro assessment of
antibacterial properties of skin mucus. Most of pathogens which
have been investigated are isolates of Aeromonas spp.,
Cytophaga/flexibacter-like bacteria, Vibrio spp., flavobacterium
sp., Pseudomonas sp., Yersinia spp. and PasteureUa sp. The data
show that there is a variation in the quality of the mucus from the
fish species investigated.
In general, the antibacterial activity of mucus, when tested in vitro,
was inversely related to the in vivo pathogenicity of the same
isolate of the pathogen. Growth inhibition of bacteria by fish
mucus emphasises two criteria for practical aquaculture, firstly,
emphasis should be on the maintenance of a good layer of external
mucus surfaces by careful management and good nutrition and
secondly, selection of fish species which inherently possess strong
inhibitory activities against pathogens in their mucus may be a
useful strategy.

During rutting period, the male one humped camels, extrudes a
Balloon like organ from one side of the mouth. Twelve heads of
the slaughtered one humped camels from different sexes were
examined. Air was blown through natural openings: mouth,
nares, esophagus and trachea. Cross and longitudinal sections
were made in frozen and formalin fixed specimens. It was
concluded that soft palate in one humped camesl have two almost
equal cavities with two small openings. Their ventral parts situated
against the dorsum of the tongue. The dimensions and volumes of
diverticula were measured in normal and distended ones. Different
coloured resins were injected through openings of the cavities, and
no communications observed between these diverticula. In rutting
period, camels, by contraction of muscles of the soft palate, pushes
it upward and thus prevent access expiratory to the posterior nares.
Consequently, air passing toward the oral cavity, enters into the
diverticula of the soft palate. Since these cavities are more
developed in males than in femaIs, they extrud only in males from
the side of their mouth.

that, the absence of movement and in vitro conditions could affect
the joint development and its intra-articular structures.

During a period of one year, reproductive status of twenty one
healthy maiden and parous Turkaman cross bred mares were
studied during breeding and non breeding seasons The reproductive
health and fertility of the mares ranging 3 -13 years of age were
confirmed by taking history, performing rectal palpation and
studying endometrial culture, cytology and histology. Stages of the
oestrous cycles were determined by daily teasing and rectal
palpation, the findings were compared with those of the
hysteroscopic and histologic alternations of the endometrium.
Aerophilic and microaerophilic bacterial cultures were prepared
from endometrial swabs. Twelve cases of 21 mares were in estrous
and 9 cases were in diestrous periods. Three biopsy specimens out
of 21 were diagnosed in grade 1 and 18 cases in grade IIA of the
Kenney & Doig (1986) classification. There was 71% agreement
between the diagnosis of estrous using biopsy and teasing - rectal
palpation methods. There was a statistically significant difference
between the diagnosis of the stage of estrous cycle using biopsy and
compared with teasing - rectal palpation methods,(kappa
coeffcient=0.47). There were six cases in estrous which diagnosed
diestrous using biopsy method, However, they were more than
nine years of age. Chronic degenerative endometrial disease is an
inevitable result of senility. It seems that detection of the estrous
cycle using endometrial biopsy samples should be conducted
cautiously, especially in mares over 9 years of age There was an
81% agreement between diagnosis of estrous cycle by comparing
endoscopic with teasing - rectal palpation methods. Using
McNemar test, there was no significant difference between
diagnosis of estrus cycle by endoscopic and teasing - rectal
palpation.methods. kappa coefficient test was 0.6. E. coli and
Alcaligenes were isolated from endometrial cultures in anestrous,
whereas Strep spp, Staph spp, Alcaligenes and E. coli were
isolated in cyclic mares. No bacteria were isolated from
microaerophilic cultures in charcoal agar having CO2, Endoscopic
examinations were well tolerated by all the mares and no adverse
effects were noted. The clinicians are recommended to perform
hysteroscopic examination during dietstrous injecting a
prostaglandin F2a analogue after the examination to induce
luteolysis and rapid return to estrous. In conclusion, endoscopic
evaluation of the uterus is a useful method to accertain the
reproductive health and has the advantage to that of microscpic
method.

between two groups. Because crude protein intake was higher in
silage fed group, and with considerating of feed efficacy factor the
daily weight gain was higher in this groups too, it was concluded
that the rape silage may be preferable to rape haying in lamb feed

A bacterial septicaemia occurred in 3-female oscars (Astronotus
ocellatus) of about 2-year old held in 300l freshwater aquaria in
south Tehran. The external signs of infected fish consisted of
lethargy, anaemia, distension (clinical dropsy), exophthalmia and
cataract. Internally there was a large amount of red-ascitic fluid
accumulated in the abdominal cavity with haemorrhages/
hyperaemia of internal organs, in particular, liver kidney,
peritoneum as well as the presence of dark-brown dots on the
surface of liver. Kidney was enlarged and undergone liqufactive
necrosis. The bacterio logical examination resulted in isolation of
single and pure Gram negative rod bacterium in which biochemical
and physiological characters resembles of Aeromonas veronii
biovar sobria. Experimentally, this isolate was relatively virulent to
goldfish of 2-5g at 20-23C. More details of condition such as
histopathological features and possible predisposing factors are
given in the text.

The Feline Immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a Lentivirus initially
isolated from a cat of a cattery in the U.S.A (1986). The virus is
similar in it's characters to Human Immunodeficieny virus (HIV)
FIV exists endemically between domestic cats and has been
recogniced in many countries. However, the incidence and
prevalence status of F1V have not been reported yet in Iran. On the
basis of present study; among 123 blood samples collected,
randomly, from the cats refered to Small Animals Teaching
Hospital of Tehran University and tested for FIV by ELlSA and
Immunoblotting techniques (performed in the Institute of
Immunological Sciences, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, japan)
only two cats (1.6%) have shown positive reactions. This is the first
report of FIV infection from lran.

In order to find a reference values of intra ocular pressure (lOP) in
the normal male and tamale dogs on the basis of sizes ages, a
research project were conducted. For this purpose, during one
year (1992-1993), the lOP of total 360 dogs (180 males and 180
females. either large of small sizes) refered to the Small Animal
Teaching Hospital of Tehran University were measured by Shiotz
tomometer. These dogs were subdivided in to three groups of ages
including less than one year old, between 1-5 years old and more
than five years old in each group of the large size or the small size
breeds considering the equal numbers of male or female dogs.
Therefore, there were 30 dogs in each of the three age groups
within the large or small sizes of the males or females, totally 360
normal dogs were clinically examined. Following the physical
examinaties, two drops of Tetracaine (0.5%) eye drops were used
in the right eye of the each dog . After a few minutes the lOP
pressure were measured by using Shiotz tomometer in the morning
(A.M.) at the dark room with the presence of the owner. Refering
to the converting tables of human and canine tonometries,
calibrated by peiffer (I 977) and Pickett et al (1988) for normal
canine eye, the obtained values were noted in Hg milimeters
follwing the accurate measurements. The results are shown in
tables 1 and 2 as the average values of lOP in normal male and
female dogs in different size and ages subgrouped experssing in Hg milimeters. Analysis of variance revealed that the mean values of
lOP in the small size breed dogs are significantly higher than the
large size breed dogs. There was no significant difference between
the mean lOP for male and female dogs. Concerning the
relationship of age and the mean values of lOP in all 360 days, the
statistical analysis indicated a significant difference between the
lOP of dogs in different ages (p

A survey of helminth parasites of domestic fowl carried out
in Faisalabad (Pakistan) between 1994 and 1996 showed a
high prevalence of nemaodes infestation in broiler and
local poultry. Ascardia galli and Heterakis spp. were more
prevalent in both groups of birds. Syngamus tracheae and
Capillaria spp. were also present in both groups .
Raillietina spp. were the only cestode found in both the
groups of birds. Postharmostomum commutatum
(trematode) was occurred only in local fowl.

the detailed anatomy and histology of the atrioventricular
bundle (AVB) was studied in 10 adult cats (5 males and 5
females). The trunk of the atrioventricular bundle was a
direct continuation of the atrioventricular node (AVN) with
no sharp line of demarcation between node and the bundle.
The AVB of the male cats measured 6.24 mm in length,
0.27 mm in width and 0.65 mm in thickness, while in the
female cats it was 4.75 mm in length , 0.22 mm in width
and 0.55 mm in thickness. The mean width of the right
bundle branch (RBB) in male cats was 0.24 mm, while in
the female cats it was 0.22 mm. The mean width of the left
bundle branch (LBB) in the male cats was 0.46 mm, while
in the female cats it was 0.41 mm. Also the length of LBB
in the male cats was 6.60 mm, while in the female cats it
was 5.63 mm. Histologically, the fibrous of the AVB
appeared to be organized into fascicles separated by fine
fibrous septa. The cells of the AVB were ovoid in shape
with light cytoplasm and a central nucleus. The size of
these cells were shorter and broader than working
myocardial cells and stained paler than them. Myofibrils
were located at the periphery of the cells and a large
perinuclear clear zone that contained a large amount of
glycogen were present. These cells showed faint cross
striations and there was no intercalated disc at
intercellular connections.

In this study, 60 female, New Zealand white rabbits were
chosen and divided into 3 groups . The animals in group
1&2 were immunosuppressed with dexamethazone and
cyclosporin A (CYA) respectively. The animals in group 3
(control animals) were not immunosuppressed. In each
group, half of the rabbits were infected intratracheally and
the other half were infected intravenously with 4
conidia of Aspergillus fumigatus . None of the 20 control
animals showed any clinical symptoms.all the rabbits in
groups 1&2, which were infected intravenously, developed
clinical signs of invasive aspergillosis. However, of these 2
groups the rabbits which were given the conidia
intratracheally , only 7 of 10 animals in group 1
demonstrated clinical signs of aspergillosis. At autopsy
there was macroscopic and microscopic evidence of
invasive aspergillosis. Histopathological examination
revealed hyphae invasion in liver, lung, brain and spleen.
We conclude, in natural conditions that aspergillosis is
initiated by inhalation of airborn condidia, cortison-treated
patients are more susceptible to invasive aspergillosis
than individuals who received CY-A.

In orde r to study of the hoof development in sheep . 16
Healthy sheep embryos with different ages immediately
after slaughters of their mothers in slaughter house were
collected hooges were cut half sagitilly and fixed in 10%
buffered formalin.Routine histologic processes were used
and 6µ thick paraffin sections were stained by
haematoxylin-eosin method and studied under light
microscope.the hoof has covered by the real skin at first.
The primary changes will be seen on the stratum
germinatvum of the hoof skin, which caused to formation
of the tunica interna of the wall and the papillary layer of
the sole and heel. The more supperficial layers were then
made by them, so that the tunica media of the wall were
made by the epidermis of the corium and upper of the
wall. It made up of hard keratin, thus the manufacturing
epidermis of this layer were devoided of the stratum
granulosum and keratohyalin granules. The tubular layer
of the white line were made by the lower epidermis of the wall. The papillay layers of other parts of the hoof were
made by the papillary epidermis of the same parts. The last
layer were made before birth was the tunica externa. This
layer were made by the papillay epidermis of the periople
skin.
