Abstract

This study was planned to assess the application of renal biopsy by the Vim-trucut biopsy needle and its effect on the urine and biochemical parameters.
Ten adult crossbreed cow weighing 273-340kg were used for this study. The left kindey was fixed laterally through the rectal manipulation. The biopsy needle was introduced into the left kidney through a stab incision and samples from kidney tissue were collected. Biopsy of right kidney was done through two location: The angle between the 13th rib and the lateral border of the lumber muscle below the second lumbar transverse process, which was paralele to the vertebral collum between first and second transverse process. The samples were washed, measured and transfered into 10% formaline for histological examination.
The results showed that the biopsy of left kidney was more successful than the right kidney (95% and 90% respectively). The number of glomerula in the posterior pols of the kidney were significantly (p<0.05) more than in the anterior pole. There was no significant changes in heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperture, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine and urinalysis after renal biopsy. There was evidence of hematuria post biopsy due to trauma to the renal vessels which lasted 48 hours.
It was concluded that renal biopsy in cattle is practically safe, and can be used for diagnosis of renal problems by the field practitioner.
